Radio 4’s The Food Programme has produced an excellent report on the so-called “Third Wave” of coffee, looking at the remarkable growth of specialty coffee in the UK and its effect on the coffee business as a whole. The programme was inspired by a recent report by market research firm Mintel, which found that during the recession British drinkers have been treating themselves to more expensive, higher quality coffee.
As part of the report, The Food Programme visited us at our cupping lab in London and interviewed Mercanta director Stephen Hurst. To listen to the report click here or visit www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00rzmhb – it will be available online via BBC iPlayer until 1300 on Sunday 25 April. The programme will also be repeated today (19 April) at 1600 on BBC Radio 4. Stephen features at around 8 minutes in, and again at the end of the report (Mercanta delighted to be given the last word!), though we thoroughly recommend that you listen to the whole programme.
