Mercanta has donated two sets of two tickets for the upcoming 2010 World Cup in South Africa to FIFA’s charitable Ticket Fund. This initiative will make World Cup matches accessible to thousands of South Africans who could not usually afford a ticket.
FIFA will give a total of 120,000 free tickets to South African residents through the Ticket Fund. Each of the 27,000 stadium construction workers will receive two tickets. A further 66,000 tickets will be distributed as rewards and incentives to South Africans involved in social development projects sponsored by FIFA Partners. These are focused on three core areas – health, education and the environment – and mainly target young South Africans.
Projects include: a recycling programme aimed at raising environmental-awareness among primary school children; a grassroots football organisation that uses football as a starting ground to promote the fight against HIV and Aids; and a programme to teach basic financial skills to low-income workers across South Africa.
