The Songwe region, rich in agricultural production, is situated in southern Tanzania bordering Zambia and Malawi. This is the location of the Mbozi District, populated with 175 villages and around 515,000 people.

Isaiso AA/AB

It is within the Mbozi District that the Isaiso Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society (AMCOS) was created in 2008. Today the AMCOS has 421 members, 391 of which are male and 30 are female.

Harvest begins with producers selectively handpicking their cherries at peak ripeness. Members will process their cherries at home. Hand pulpers are utilized to peel away the external fruit immediately after harvest. The beans are then fermented in tanks of water for a maximum of 72 hours to breakdown the remaining mucilage. The clean beans are then sun dried on raised beds for 9-10 days. Once dried, the beans are delivered to the Isaiso mill to be hulled and rested prior to export.

Kenya’s less well-known neighbour produces an astoundingly similar-tasting coffee in a somewhat similar landscape. Coffee is marketed by both an auction system organised by the Tanzania Coffee Board (TCB) and direct sale.

Arabica seedlings were first introduced to the country from Réunion Island (then known as Bourbon) and planted in the Bayamoyo and Mogoro regions (fairly close to Dar Es Salaam) and were later established as a successful commercial crop in 1893 on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro by German colonizers.
